SAVMA Symposium 2011 - Business speakers
Hey Everyone,
Happy end of the school year to many of you! As most of you know UC Davis is hosting the 2011 SAVMA Symposium. We plan on having one lecture series dedicated solely to business topics. I thought I'd consult the western region to see if any of you have ideas for speakers or even wet-labs that might work well at symposium. I'd love to hear your ideas.
Cheers,

I think it would be great if
I think it would be great if we could have a speaker on setting prices, what is fair and where to start. I don't know of any speakers on the topic but think it would be very helpful.
negotiation and regional tour
Jason and Brandi,
Actually, I'm working with Tom Schwarzer of BI to start a regional tour (in which he visits all the schools in our region in a single time period) with - guess what - negotiation as the topic! If you'd like (and you give me dates), I can see if he'd be willing/interested in speaking at the SAVMA Symposium next year as part of the tour. Let me know what you think!
symposium workshop
Hey Kendra and Brandi,
We are already working on a contract negotiation workshop that will most likely be run by Vivian Wright, our schools GHLIT rep. She did negotiation workshops for our chapter last year with rave reviews and she has more contacts in the industry than anyone I've ever met.
I'll let our lecture people know about Tom Schwarzer and see what they think. I like the idea of Byron Farquar on buying a practice. He has given talks for us before which were very well received.
Thanks for the great ideas.
Cheers,
Jason
Negotiation and Regional Tour
Hi Kendra,
That sounds terrific! I can certainly work with whatever timeline you have; however, my term ends on February 28th, so I may not have much say after that date. I would be open anytime in November, January, or February. If March is ideally the best time, I could probably work with it. Do you know what his speaking fee is? Would he prefer a lunch or dinner event? Thanks for working on this!

Negotiation Workshop
Hi Jason,
I think it would be wonderful if you had a "negotiation Wetlab" at the symposium. Specifically, students would be instructed on how to "rate" their priorities when looking for their first job after vet school, and determine their Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA), similar to the Boehringer Ingelheim sponsored dinner banquet talk at the National meeting last January. I think contract negotiation, especially for our first job, is a bit intimidating and nerve-racking for most veterinary students. By providing a wetlab, students gain the tools to feel more comfortable about this important meeting.
Additionally, I think it would be great if you could find a speaker to speak about "Buying an existing practice vs. creating a start-up practice." Dr Byron Farquer with Simmons Veterinary Practice Sales and Appraisals (pacific@simmonsinc.com) is listed on VetPartners as a speaker for this topic; however, I have contacted him twice to see if he would speak at WesternU and haven't received a response.\
Hope that helps!
Take Care,
