VBMA "wetlabs"?

We were trying to find some ideas for meetings that get the students involved more, some hands-on activities. Do your chapters have anything like this? How do you do them?

Wetlabs to consider

We have taken a different approach to wetlabs. While we are pursuing person budgeting, interviewing workshops, etc., we are also doing more traditional wetlabs that highlight revenue opportunities for future practitioners. These include AVID microchipping, and, new this year, Wisdom Panel DNA testing. These are popular because they are very animal interactive, we do give VBMA members discounts, and it exposes more students to these service options they may want to offer to clients in the future themselves.

Oklahoma State

Last year, We attempted to have a communication workshop where we would be video-taped doing a client interview, and then would be able to sit down with our professor that teaches communication to get feedback. We did not end up doing the workshop due to bad timing and a lack of people able to or wanting to do the workshop. We do this through one of our classes each year and it is helpful to go back and watch yourself and see what you are doing while talking to a client and performing a physical exam.

Wet Labs

We haven't had any "wet labs" here at K-State for the VBMA but one of our faculty advisers recommended holding a budget workshop where members would work with a financial planner to map out their own budgets or see how long it would take to pay off loans or holding an inventory management workshop in which students would be mock owners of a generic vet practice and would be responsible for ordering/managing products for the hospital in different scenarios. Hope this helps!
