What we're doing at MSU to recruit new members for this fall.

I don't know if you all have this problem but here at Michigan State, there is approximately 25 clubs and growing. I think, at most, any one student will join 3 to 5 clubs and maybe become a board member on 2 of those clubs. We're trying to stand out in the crowd but finding it increasingly difficult to do so.

This fall, we have 3 events in the first week to try to get our name out there. We are sponsoring breakfast refreshments for the new students on the very first morning of the very first day (the 27th) of orientation. We are again sponsoring refreshments outside of the first year classroom the following week and we are speaking at the club fair on September 3rd. We'll have the banner and brochures available to help relay the benefits of membership but I feel like we are still just another club in a sea of clubs. Does anyone have any ideas for me on how I can differentiate the VBMA from all of the other choices the students have?

I'll be checking this post throughout the next month so feel free to post. I'd appreciate the advice especially from those schools with large memberships.

Thanks. Tom.

Sounds like a great start!!

Sounds like a great start!!

Are you able to have a meeting with just the first years like over lunch or during a "free period" (does anyone actually have those?) that way you can have their undivided attention? Club fairs are great but can be very overwhelming.

What are you currently offering for membership perks? Are the memberships for 1 year or multiple years?

What are you going to do to target those beyond the 1st year?
